Tonight was one of those nights I wish I could live forever. Its July 1 and the sunsets in Colorado are purple, pink, golden and immaculate. A small group of close friends and I gathered onto the deck to grill brats and veggies, drink wine, back brownies, watch the sunset and talk until it was all of a sudden 10pm. I love how these nights go. Feet are kicked up on the table. Wine botles empty. Bellies full. Everyone breathing a little deeper, sharing eye contact, laughing unguardedly, and then all of a sudden we realize its dark and we have to sleep because we are all working adults with responsibilities and jobs to go to in the morning. The sunset made us forget. The laughter and chirping birds confused us. The summer breeze and ways our knees were curled up under us in the chair made us feel like children again. The way we just had all the time in the world for one another.....made us believe we were allowed to take up space. This is the gift of presence, wrapped up in a colorful Colorado evening. And tonight, it was gifted to me.
You know when you see two people together and you sigh and say "wow, they're so good for each other....." Well, what about you? Why are you good for people? What makes you different than anyone else? What do you bring to the dinner table? I don't want you to sell me on you. I don't need a sales pitch on why we should love you. We already do. You are already loved unconditionally. And now that you know that, you can answer the question unashamedly. Why are you good for people? Whats your thing? What do YOU do?
Awkward smiles spread across everyones faces when I asked this. No one things about it, you know? Why should I stay in the world? Why am I good for humanity? It's a happy thought, isn't it?
I want to leave this here. Think on it. Journal about it. Talk about it. YOU ARE SO GOOD FOR PEOPLE.
You make people think.
You create beautiful things.
You help people find who they truly are.
You help people move beyond who they are right now.
You make people feel safe.
You make people feel brave.
You feed people hearty and delicious dishes.
You nourish people's souls.
You make people belly laugh.
You make people forget to look at their phones.
You make people curious.
You add beauty and definition and texture to other peoples lives. You deserve to be here. We like having you here!
